'Stargazing Live' - The ABC's 'Stargazing Live' partnered with the Australian National University (ANU) and Australians across the country to beat the Guinness World Records title.

June 23 - This event saw thousands of telescopes delivered to registered events, and on the evening of June 23, all were pointed at the night sky at the same time.

Across the country - 30,000 telescopes were delivered across the country to almost 300 stargazing parties for the event.

Great - Over 40,000 people participated, and according to ANU, the effort was so great that Guinness World Records officials were unable to confirm the numbers on the final 'Stargazing Live' episode.

Exploding stars - Citizen scientists searched through images from ANU SkyMapper telescope helping to identify two new Type Ia supernovae (exploding stars used measure the Universe).

Siding Spring Observatory - The huge Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) at the Siding Spring Observatory turned towards the galaxy that emitted the tell-tale flash and caught the afterglow.

Host - Brian Cox and Julia Zemiro hosted the 'Stargazing Live' broadcast from ANU's Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) in NSW in real time.

Only half the story - "It's great to break the world record for the number of people stargazing simultaneously, but I think this is only half the story," Cox said, according to ABC.

Real value - "The real value is that many thousands of Australians have been introduced to the wonders of the night sky, and many of those will be children. They will develop a lifelong interest in astronomy and science, and the impact of that will be felt in decades to come."

Walk on Mars - He continued, "Perhaps the first Australian to walk on Mars will have been inspired by this spectacular night."

Coonabarabran, NSW - Home to Warrumbungle Observatory, Coonabarabran is well-known for being a dark-sky park. One of only a few in the world, it is an area that prohibits artificial light.
