Quentin Tarantino's latest film 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' has been lauded as his best work yet, and it earned a seven-minute-long (some say six) standing ovation after screening at the Cannes Film Festival. While even six minutes of smacking your hands together sounds impossibly long, it doesn't even come close to the longest standing ovations.
Tarantino's ninth feature film takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, knee-deep in hippy Hollywood. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton, former star of a western TV series, and Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth, his longtime stunt double. The star-studded flick focuses on the infamous Manson family murders, with Margot Robbie cast as Sharon Tate, and it's reported to be thrillingly provocative and expertly crafted, with a rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. And yet, despite all of that, the longest applause in Cannes history was more than three times as long.
As a prestigious and time-honored event, the famed film festival has a long history of overzealous applause. The celebrated actors and directors stand awkwardly for the entire duration, unsure of what to do with their hands, and it's weird but sweet.
Of course, a standing ovation always trumps being booed, for which the festival is also notorious, despite its elite crowds. Surprising films like 'Taxi Driver' (1976), 'L'Avventura' (1960), and Sofia Coppola's 'Marie Antoinette' (2006) were all booed by men and women in tuxedos and gowns.
Tarantino's 1994 'Pulp Fiction' was the cause of some boos at the festival as well, but only when it won the Palme d'Or over Krzysztof Kieślowski's 'Three Colors: Red.' This year, however, he's entered the ranks of the films with the most applause.
In list gathered by Quartz from news reports over the years, many surprising films have earned the longest standing ovations in Cannes history. Out of 28 films, 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' doesn't even crack the top 10. Click through to find out the films with the most physically demanding fanfare.
