You've likely seen them in person or on TV at Pride parades: masculine figures with white face makeup, often some kind of facial hair, and, most strikingly, dressed like nuns. Meet the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

The roots of the members of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence go back to 1979 and San Francisco, meaning they celebrate their 40th anniversary this year. And a lot has changed in 40 years, including chapters of the organization establishing themselves across North and South America, as well as in Europe and Australia.

A "charity and street performance organization," the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence use religious imagery to raise funds for AIDS and LGBT-related causes, just to name a few of their responsibilities.
