Australia set to hold the world's richest greyhound race -

The collaboration of Greyhound Racing NSW and Ladbrokes Australia has created the richest greyhound race in the world, the Million Dollar Chase, according to 2GB.

Banned - NSW government have decided to invest $500,000 of taxpayers' money into this event, only two years after trying to ban the sport.

Greyhound racing - This sport has been a controversial issue in Australia for some time now. There are many cases against continuing it, that even the government, at one point, agreed with.

Treatment - The treatment of these dogs have not been at the forefront of the sport, which is hard to understand when they are the ones performing.

One million - People are criticising the NSW government for injecting $500,000 of funds into the event's prize money, which adds up to $1 million.

Crown - The event "will be the the jewel in greyhound racing's crown and feature the best dogs in NSW" as reported by ABC.

Funds - NSW Racing Minister Paul Toole revealed that the funds will be taken from NSW's Community Development Fund (CDV).

Restore - This fund was last used to restore war memorials in 2016.

Regional - The qualifying races are set to be held in regional areas, including Bathurst, Lismore and Grafton. They'll be closely watched by the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission.

Boost - "When you have a look at the economic boost that is provided by greyhound racing, you see the people that are turning up to these events, it provides a huge boost to those local towns."

Changes - This event is also focused on the life of the dog after the event.

Entry - Entry fees from every race will include a donation to the Greyhounds as Pets program with those entering, who must also commit to re-homing their dog when it retires, according to 2GB.

Career - If the winning dog is not re-homed after its racing career, but instead put down, the prize money of $1 million will have to be returned in full.

Refunded - Greyhound Racing NSW CEO, Tony Mestrov said, "If you don’t re-home your dog at the end of its racing career and you win… the $1 million has to be refunded."

Viable - Toole said, "It goes to show how greyhound racing is making some changes here in this state to ensure that it’s sustainable and it’s viable."

No other alternative - Baird said, "Certainly this is not an easy decision. It's not something that has been taken lightly. But when confronted with Justice McHugh's report, I believe there is no other alternative."

Mass grave - According to ABC, earlier this year the RSPCA announced what they found at the home of a western Sydney greyhound trainer. It was a mass dog grave.

NSW RSPCA - It was reported by Ped.TV that NSW RSPCA removed over 20 neglected greyhounds out of a trainers care after finding the bodies of nine dogs on their Hunter Valley premises.

Death toll - An industry with the estimated death toll of 48,000 and 68,000 dogs bred to race between 2004 and 2016, and consistent evidence of neglect, backlash has been strong towards the upcoming race.
