Dreamtime clash - The MCG is the staple location for this event, a clash between AFL rivals, Essendon Bombers and Richmond Tigers.

Lights out - Once everyone is seated it's lights out, and Indigenous-based music and dance opens the event providing pre-game entertainment before the traditional ceremony.

2008 - In 2008, Ursula Yovich, Ron Murray, Kev Carmody, and Jessica Mauboy - all highly acclaimed indigenous artists, performed alongside Paul Kelly.

Wurundjeri - The Wurundjeri Land Council collaborated with dancers to put together this year's performances. The Aboriginal rapper Briggs performed afterwards.

Uncle Bill Nicholson - Wurundjeri elder Uncle Bill Nicholson performed the Welcome to Country ceremony saying, “Tonight’s ceremony and musical performance will symbolise the spirit of understanding, respect, resilience, healing, and reconciliation”, according to P.TV.

Sir Doug Nicholls - Since 2016, the annual round has been in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls, who played 54 games for Fitzroy.

Knighted - He was the first Aboriginal person to be knighted. Later he became the Governor of South Australia, and at one point was also appointed King of Moomba.

Maurice Rioli - Another renowned indigenous player was Maurice Rioli who played for the Tigers from 1982 to 1987. He won the 1982 Norm Smith Medal, and Best and Fairest for two consecutive years.

Politics - After his AFL career, Rioli got into politics. He worked on Indigenous issues in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. He later worked in community services on Tiwi Island.

Headline - The players of the headline match of the Indigenous Round ran through their team banner, representing the breakdown of stigma and walls between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

War Cry - As part of the pre-game ceremony for Dreamtime at the ‘G, the two football clubs created War Cry performances for the third consecutive year.

Indigenous players - This year's clash had some strong Indigenous players. Essendon included Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, and Richmond included Shane Edwards and Daniel Rioli.

Daniel Rioli - Rioli, whose great-uncle is Maurice Rioli, and cousin is Cyril Rioli, put up a fight and showed off why he was nominated for the 2016 Rising Star award.

Guernseys - Now a tradition, all 18 clubs have Indigenous-designed Guernseys to wear throughout the Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Winner - This year's winner was Richmond by 71 points against Essendon who finished with 43 points.

Yiooken Award - Each year the player who was best on ground for the clash is awarded the Yiooken Award.

Kevin Sheedy - Kevin Sheedy was present at the game too, having played for Richmond during his AFL career, and then came back for more by coaching Essendon for over 30 years.

Curtain Raiser - Before the big event is the Curtain Raiser match, comprising of two football teams going head to head. It also includes traditional dancing and singing before the match.
