HEALTH Vaping

What used to be thought of as the healthier alternative to cigarettes, vaping is now considered to be cancer-causing.

A study out of New York University School of Medicine found that vaping could put you at a "higher risk" of cancer and heart disease.

The study included lab mice being subjected to 12 weeks of e-cigarette smoke. The researchers found they all had DNA damage to their bladders, hearts, and lungs. The conclusion being that, no matter how it is consumed, nicotine could be a carcinogen.

While it will take longer to know the exact effects on humans, this information could be useful to those wanting to avoid any possible damage.

These findings support action to regulate e-cigarettes based on their tobacco-like effects. Currently it is illegal for those under the age of 18 to purchase an e-cigarette, and the FDA is working to better regulate the ingredients and product features.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2017.
