The rise of vegetarianism and veganism around the world has had a surprising impact on age-old establishments and previously booming food distributors. While many menus are opting for more plant-based fare, others are sticking to their guns and witnessing the impact in the cash register.

Simon Clarke, the manager of the 128-year-old traditional British eatery AJ Goddard Pie and Mash, claims that the rise of veganism is the reason his historic restaurant is being shut down.

“People that have moved in around here over the last few years are definitely into fad diets,” Clarke said, according to The Sun. “I’ve had a few people come in off the streets asking if I do vegan pies. It’s like some kind of bad joke—we’re a traditional pie and mash shop. Of course we don’t sell vegan pies.”

The UK's vegan population has grown by 600% in the past two years alone, and this vast number is seen through those opting for veggie burgers over jellied eels.

"Everyone's moved away and my clientele is not here no more," Clarke said. "The queue was hanging out the door but now it's dribs and drabs. Now half the people who walk past the shop don't know what pie and mash is."

Clarke is holding a closing party at the restaurant on October 7. Patrons should not expect to find any vegan options in sight.
