CELEBRITY Scandal

When you’re a celebrity, doing the things regular people do in privacy is difficult because everyone always wants to see more of you—especially the parts you want to keep hidden.

It’s also terrifyingly easy for people to hack into phones and iCloud accounts to find all those especially hidden bits.

In recent years, taking naked photos has been championed as an act of empowerment for women, reclaiming their sexuality from the society that has tried to control and manipulate it for decades. That’s the same wave of progressive thought that actress Bella Thorne was riding when she decided to leak her own naked photos.

She was being blackmailed by a hacker who had gotten a hold of the photos, and the 21-year-old decided to take “[her] own power back” and post them to her Twitter on June 15. “I feel gross. I feel watched, I feel someone has taken something from me that I only wanted one special person to see,” she said.

News traveled fast, and the hosts of ‘The View’ brought the topic up on June 17. Whoopi Goldberg made the unwise decision in this day and age to effectively blame the victim, as she went after Thorne for taking the photo in the first place.

“If you’re famous, I don’t care how old you are," Goldberg said, before claiming that you should never take naked photos of yourself. “If you don’t know this in 2019, that this is an issue, I’m sorry ... You cannot be surprised if someone’s hacked you, especially if you have stuff on your phone.”

Thorne took to her Instagram Stories to share her teary-eyed response: “Shame on you.”

“I just want to say that watching this video made me feel really bad about myself,” Thorne said. “You’re so crazy for thinking such terrible things on such an awful situation.”

She urged Goldberg to change her views and then announced that she was cancelling her own appearance on ‘The View’ because she didn’t want to be “beaten down by a bunch of older women for my body and my sexuality.”

Thorne likened Goldberg’s response to telling women that if they go out drinking and dancing in sexy clothes, they deserve to be sexually assaulted. She also expressed sadness for all the other celebrities who had their naked photos leaked, including Jennifer Lawrence who felt sexually violated after being hacked.
