Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie Bezos, posted a joint statement on Twitter January 9 announcing their divorce after 25 years of marriage. Unfortunately, in all that time—while Jeff's company made him filthy rich—they did not have a prenuptial agreement.
When the couple married back in 1993, Amazon didn't exist and Jeff wasn't a millionaire, and he would only become one four years later. Now, however, the CEO is worth $137 billion, and the couple had reportedly acquired 400,000 acres of property, making them two of the biggest landholders in the US. In addition to owning 16% of Amazon, Jeff also bought The Washington Post and Blue Origin, a space exploration company.
Fortunately, their split seems quite amicable, as their joint statement reads, "After a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends. We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again."
Following the announcement of the divorce came multiple reports that Jeff has been seeing former 'Good Day L.A.' co-host Lauren Sanchez, the estranged wife of Patrick Whitesell, who is the co-CEO of the major Hollywood agency WME, representing the likes of Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Michelle Williams. Apparently Whitesell, Sanchez, and the Bezos pair had been good friends for some time.
Though it may be a little awkward for MacKenzie, if the couple splits their fortune equally, she could have $69 billion to her name, making her the world's richest woman, and replacing Jeff with Bill Gates as the richest man in the world. Who knew the affairs of the heart could so greatly affect the global wealth ranking?
