CELEBRITY Offset

Movies have taught us time and again that if you make a mistake and lose the love of your life, the best thing to do is make the "grand gesture," professing your love and asking for them back—the more public, the better. But, as it turns out, movies are a little different from real life.

Following Cardi B's announcement that she and Offset are splitting, the Migos rapper got candid on social media about missing his wife. Then on December 15, in the middle of her headlining set at the Rolling Loud Festival in LA, he appeared on stage with cake and flowers that read, "Take me back Cardi."

The clip shows a stunned and uncomfortable Cardi, completely out of character for her, and you can hear Offset on the microphone saying, "I'm sorry," and "I love you." Perhaps he was hoping that the social pressure of thousands of eyes watching would make Cardi crack, but Offset soon exited into the wings and his gifts were wheeled off after him.

One Twitter user detailed what happened, explaining that Cardi "kicked him out and 30 seconds after she came back with a big smile like a boss and killed this gig."

While this might've gone differently on the silver screen, the reality is that if a grand gesture isn't desired, then it's not cute or romantic. Many have said that Cardi's decision to end their relationship should be respected, not viewed as a challenge. What Offset did accomplish, however, was ruin an important moment that should have been hers alone.

Naturally, fans on Twitter had a few things to say about the whole ordeal.

Offset posted a video on Instagram on the 15th, apologizing for embarrassing Cardi and breaking her heart, admitting that he wasn't a good husband, claiming that he didn't really cheat on her but "was entertaining it," and saying that his only birthday wish was to have her back. Spoiler alert: he didn't get his birthday wish.

Though celebrities like John Mayer have supported Offset's endeavor, Twitter is less sympathetic to the rapper: "What Offset is doing to Cardi is abusive. I don’t think it’s cute at all. Stop glorifying toxic men."

Cardi, however, came to Offset's defense in another Instagram video, where she made it clear that she doesn't want her fans to attack him. “I’m not saying that I’m gonna get back together with [Offset], I just don’t like that bashing online thing,” she said, later referencing Pete Davidson's recent note expressing suicidal ideation after being bullied online.

After all of this, Offset tweeted, "All of my wrongs have been made public, I figure it’s only right that my apologies are made public too," arguing that he was "just trying." He added, "thank god I ain’t got no balloons sheeesh."
