CELEBRITY Scandal

The number of followers you have on social media platforms like Twitter are often interpreted as direct representations of popularity, but a recent report is here to shatter that belief.

SparkToro is a website that analyzes Twitter accounts for bots, spam, and inactive users—in other words, fake followers—in order to investigate the truth behind people's online presence.

As most of the world knows, President Donald Trump loves Twitter and uses it as his primary channel to the world. His enormous online following made some people suspicious, however, and they took to SparkToro's tool to see who is really tuned in to Trump's every 140-character whim. The results are shocking.

More than half of the president's followers were found to be fake! Of his 55 million followers, over 33.4 million were found to be phantom accounts. That's a whopping 61% and a tremendous amount of fake news for someone who is so profoundly against the lies of popular media.

Trump’s account reportedly has the highest percentage of fake followers out of all Twitter users, the second-highest spot belonging to California Governor Jerry Brown, according to The Daily Mail.

World-famous pop star Katy Perry, who runs the most-followed account on Twitter, was also revealed to have an embarrassing amount of fake followers. Of her 108 million followers, almost 47 million were found to be spam, bots, propaganda, or inactive. That's a cool 43.7%.

All of this is proof that now, more than ever, we shouldn't just believe what we read.
