Brownlow Medal winners of the last 30 years -

The Brownlow Medal has been a staple in AFL tradition awarded by the officiating field umpires to the 'best and fairest' the Monday before the Grand Final every season since 1924. The medal was named after Charlie Brownlow, a legendary footballer, club secretary and VFL president in the early days.

1988: Gerard Healy - Healy started his career with the Melbourne Demons in 1979, and moved to the Sydney Swans in 1985. Later winning the Brownlow Medal in 1988.

1989: Paul Couch - Couch was included in Geelong's Team of the Century after winning the Charlie (an informal name for the Brownlow Medal).

 1990: Tony Liberatore - Liberatore won 'best and fairest' awards in all three divisions - under 19, reserves, and seniors for Footscray FC (now Western Bulldogs). He is the shortest player to have ever won a Brownlow.

1991: Jim Stynes - Irishman Stynes became the first internationally-born AFL player to receive a Brownlow playing for Melbourne Demons.

1992: Scott Wynd - Following in teammate Liberatore's footsteps, Wynd won the Brownlow in 1992 for Footscray FC.

1993: Gavin Wanganeen - Having won the Brownlow on the Monday evening, Wanganeen later went on to win the 1993 Premiership for the Essendon Bombers.

1994: Greg Williams - With 30 votes form the umpires that year, Williams was the indisputable winner. He had also won the Brownlow Medal in 1986, as well as 1994.

1995: Paul Kelly - Sydney Swans captain for a decade, Kelly was known as Captain Courageous. He won the Brownlow in 1995.

1996: Michael Voss and James Hird - Voss of Brisbane Bears (now Lions) and Hird of Essendon Bombers both received Charlies for the 1996 season having received 21 points each from the umpires.

1997 & 1998: Robert Harvey - St Kilda Saints legend, Harvey won the Brownlow two years in a row, and made it as number 30 in the top 50 players of all time, according to Mike Sheahan.

1999: Shane Crawford - Debuting in 1993 for Hawthorn Hawks, Crawford became captain in 1999, the same year he won the Brownlow Medal.

2000: Shane Woewodin - Starting with Melbourne, Woewodin won a Charlie in 2000. A year transferring to play for Collingwood Magpies.

2001: Jason Akermanis - Having won the Brownlow Medal in 2001, Akermanis went on to win three Premierships for the Brisbane Lions.

2002: Simon Black - Like teammate Akermanis, Black won the Brownlow Medal in 2002, as well as three Premierships. In 2003, Black also won the Norm Smith Medal.

2003: Mark Rucciuto, Nathan Buckley and Adam Goodes - During the 2003 AFL season, three players won the Brownlow for the second time in history - Rucciuto of Adelaide Crows, Buckley of Collingwood Magpies and Goodes of Sydney Swans - all with 22 points.

2004 & 2010: Chris Judd - Judd won two Brownlows, the 2005 Norm Smith Medal, the 2006 Premiership, two Leigh Matthews Trophies (2006 & 2011), and was captain of two AFL teams.

2005: Ben Cousins - Charlie was awarded to Cousins in 2005, two years before he arrested on drugs charges and was banned from playing AFL. He is number 42 in the top 50 AFL players of all time.

2006: Adam Goodes - Goodes won his second Brownlow in 2006. He won two Premierships (2005 & 2012) during his time with the Sydney Swans, and was awarded Australian of the Year in 2014 .

2007: Jimmy Bartel - Triple premiership player, Bartel won the Brownlow in 2007. He later went on to win the Norm Smith Medal in 2011.

2008: Adam Cooney - Cooney received 24 votes from umpires, becoming the tenth Western Bulldogs player to win a Brownlow.

2009 & 2013: Gary Ablett Jr. - Gary Ablett Jr. won two Brownlow Medals with two AFL teams - Geelong Cats and Gold Coast Suns. With 246 votes from umpires throughout his AFL career, it is the most any player has received.

2011: Dane Swan - Premiership player and Leigh Matthews trophy winner, Swan won the Brownlow in 2011 for Collingwood.

2012: Jobe Watson (suspended) - Watson was awarded the medal in 2012, but in 2016 became ineligible because he was suspended due to the Essendon supplement saga.

2012: Trent Cotchin and Sam Mitchell - In 2016, the Brownlow Medal was awarded to the runners-up, Cotchin and Mitchell, who both received 26 votes from umpires, four below Watson's.

2014: Matt Priddis - Charlie was awarded to Priddis in 2014 after umpires gave him 26 votes.

2015: Nathan Fyfe - Current Fremantle captain, Fyfe won the Brownlow in 2015, as well as two Leigh Matthews trophies in 2014 and 2015.

2016: Patrick Dangerfield - With the most votes ever given in one season, Dangerfield was awarded the Brownlow Medal with 35 votes.

2017: Dustin Martin - However, Martin topped Dangerfield with 36 votes for Charlie the year after. Martin also went on to win a premiership in the same season for Richmond Tigers.

2018: Tom Mitchell - In round one earlier this year, Mitchell broke the record of most disposals in an AFL game. He was announced 2018 Brownlow Medal winner.
