TV shows - Australians tend to gravitate towards home renovations and developments. This is reflected in the various popular TV shows on screen these days.

'The Block' - Starting in 2003, the reality TV show based on a block or row of houses in Melbourne, pinned couples against each other to complete rooms weekly until their designated property was fully renovated.

Judged - They were judged weekly and accumulated points throughout the season. Once they finished renovating the properties would go on the market and auctioned off.

Highest - The couple who received the most for the property would win.

'House Rules' - Similar to 'The Block', this show pinned couples against each other to complete weekly tasks and renovations.

Interstate - However, this show was a national show, with every couple giving up their mortgaged house to have each room renovated by the other couples within a week.

Paid for - Every week there would judging and point system, as well as extra challenges. The winning couple had their mortgage paid off, as well as all the renovations that were completed on the house.

Cheeky - McCloud is known for his condescending yet endearing demeanour with the amateur home renovators on his show.

A little push - "I can be cheeky and a bit abrasive and push them because they're so righteous," McCloud said on his last 2013 visit.

Say what you want - "They're so possessed of their own righteousness and zeal; they just get this glazed look in their eyes. You can say whatever you want to them."

Tears - The anticipation of a project can be suspenseful under the guise of McCloud. Like when the £80,000 renovation of a Thames barge ended in tears.

The human condition - Although McCloud offers advice here and there, some overzealous DIY enthusiasts tend to ignore it and risk cost overruns, planning disputes and contractors walking off the job.

Vast - "The geology and the climate are vast. In Melbourne homes are built around insulation and heating so they feel cosy." He continued.

Well-suited - "In Sydney or Queensland, where the climate is more tropical, it’s all about cooling so you can get homes with no walls!"

The humble shed - McCloud said, "People are moving away from modernist, funky-looking homes to more practical designs like the Aussie shed."
