Meryl Streep’s style: 40 years of pure class - On June 22, the wonderful Meryl Streep will celebrate her 69th birthday. For four decades, she has brightened our days with her beautiful skills. The current holder of the record for the most Oscar nominations of any actor with a whopping 21 has also wowed us with her dazzling looks, a combination of simplicity, chicness, and subtly sexiness.

1978 - At 29, Streep saw her breakthrough when she starred in 'The Deer Hunter' on Robert De Niro’s suggestion, and for which she received her first Oscar nomination. She also won an Emmy for the mini-series 'Holocaust' that year. She was off to a great start.

1979 - Just a year later, she won her first Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in 'Kramer vs. Kramer.' She famously forgot the statuette in the bathroom after her speech.

1980 - Streep had progressed to leading roles and was quickly rising to stardom. She was featured on the cover of Newsweek on its January 7, 1980, edition, which read, “A Star For the '80s.” And right they were.

1981 - She landed her first leading role in 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' for which she was awarded a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Despite her success, Streep said: “I couldn't help wishing that I was more beautiful,” according to a Time magazine article.

1982 - Streep’s portrayal of the Holocaust survivor in 'Sophie’s Choice' was voted the third greatest movie performance of all time by Premiere magazine. Unsurprisingly, she won the Oscar for Best Actress.

1985 - After starring in 'Out of Africa,' Streep shot right into stardom, becoming one of  Hollywood’s most recognizable faces. But such fame always comes with comparable expectations.

1986-1987 - She went on to star in films whose reception paled in comparison to her previous success. 'Heartburn' (1986, pictured) and 'Ironweed' (1987) appealed to a narrow audience.
