Perth airport has seen the largest jump in the rankings out of all Aussie airports.

Just a year ago, in 2017, Perth Airport was in 71st position, which is 12 places lower than its current and new ranking.

Award-winning airport -

Perth Airport, which is Australia's fourth busiest airport, came in second place at Skytrax's 2018 World's Most Improved Airports, losing out to Rome Fiumicino Airport in Italy. 

In 2016, the Australian Airports Association awarded the airport with the Capital City Airport of the Year Award, proof that it was already improving.

Bright future -

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) awarded Perth Airport as Australia's best in 2018, which was a far cry from their criticism on the report in years prior.

In 2012, the ACCC rated the airport as the worst in Australia in its annual report. This is proof that Perth Airport has come a long way in the last few years, hooray!

Last year (2017), Gold Coast Airport ranked in 50th place on the Skytrax list. 

Despite falling in a lower ranking in 2018, the airport is still considered one of the six best Aussie airports, and the sixth busiest too.

Interesting facts about Gold Coast Airport -

Back in 1936, the airport consisted of a few and small grass lanes that functioned as emergency landing for planes flying between Brisbane and Sydney.

Until 1999, the airport was known as the Coolangatta Airport. For those who don't know, 'coolangatta' is an Aboriginal word that means 'place of good view'.

According to the airport's website, it's Australia's third-fastest-growing airport in the country.

New Zealand's Christchurch International Airport became the country's first-ever international airport in 1950, ten years after originally opening in 1940.

The airport is the second busiest in New Zealand, after Auckland. 

Did you know? Christchurch International Airport is one of the two airports that handles and flies planes Boeing 747 and Airbus A380. Auckland does too.

In 2011, the airport expanded and opened its new primary wing. Its construction was complete in 2013.

Up three spots from the 2017 ranking, is Melbourne Airport—Australia's second busiest airport.

Also known as Tullamarine Airport, it's the third-best Aussie airport to make the Skytrax Top 100 Airports list in 2018.

Melbourne Airport was a replacement -

Melbourne Airport replaced Essendon Airport as the city's primary airport in 1970, despite being further away from Melbourne's CBD.

According to air traffic data, Melbourne Airport saw 25 million domestic and 10 million passengers pass through between 2016 and 2017.

Awarded and criticised -

The airport's Terminal 4 was crowned as the third Best Low-Cost Airline Terminal in the world by Skytrax.

Despite the award, the terminal had previously been criticised by travellers and workers for its being too long of a walk to gates and for the lack of seating throughout, according to the Herald Sun.

New Zealand's biggest airport, which is also the busiest, makes it clear on why it's also considered the country's best.

This said, Auckland Airport was ranked two places lower than in the 2017 Skytrax list. Also, in 2013, the airport was reportedly the 13th best on the list, what a drop!

Throughout Australasia, Auckland comes in as the fourth after Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Brisbane Airport has fallen from being voted as the best Aussie airport, to being the second-best. 

In 2017, the airport ranked in 16th place, four places down from its current 22nd place in the Skytrax list.

Second best, third busiest -

In addition to being the third-busiest airport in Australia, it's also the third airport down under with the highest number of domestic flights.

Brisbane Airport is also the main hub for Virgin Australia Airlines, and the second for Australia's oldest airline, Qantas.

Passenger traffic -

According to Brisbane Airport data, the airport had more than 23.4 million domestic and international passengers in the 2017/2018 financial year. 

It has been estimated that by 2035 the number of passengers will increase to 50 million, thanks to the new Brisbane airport runway (which is predicted to open in 2020).

Sydney Airport is slowly but surely climbing up the Skytrax ranking.

In 2018, it was voted the highest among Australian airports, at 20th place (three places higher from 2017).

Sydney beat Brisbane -

Although Brisbane has been knocked-off from first place, Sydney's 2018 ranking is not quite as high as what Brisbane's was last year (16th place).

It still has a long way to beat the world's best airport, Singapore Changi Airport, which has remained at the top for the last six years.

It may come as no surprise that Australia's busiest airport is also the hub and base for Qantas airlines, the country's oldest air carrier. 

The airport is also one of the longest and "oldest continually operating airports in the world".
