Here ye, here ye! Medieval fairs of Australia -

Sydney held the first World Jousting Championships last year. It had knights from the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, France and Norway, as well as a demonstration of Australia's only giant trebuchet catapult.

'Tis the season - These festivals celebrate the Middle Ages in the form of medieval carnivals that bring loyal subjects to dress in lavish garments and watch grand tournaments.

Upcoming - There are three major festivals in Australia including Balingup Medieval Carnivale, St Ives Medieval Faire, and Timeline Festival.

Balingup Medieval Carnivale - WA's resident medieval festival will be on August 25 and 26, held in the small town of Balingup.

WA - It is the largest and oldest medieval carnival on the west coast of Australia.

Entertainment - The carnival invites fairies, jesters, dancers, minstrels, jugglers, theatre people, acrobats, and knights for reenactments and demonstrations.

Feast - On Friday night guests are invited to feast as they did in the Middle Ages, and era-attire is encouraged.

St Ives Medieval Faire - The famous International Solid Lance Jousting Tournament is held at this Sydney fair, as well as over 350 medieval reenactors.

Showgrounds - The fair is held at St Ives Showgrounds and run by the Ku-ring-gai Council every year.

Historic - It aims to accurately recreate Medieval Europe, hay-strewn and hand-forged, with tournaments, feasts, artisan merchants, and entertainment.

Jousting - The only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere, the International Solid Lance Jousting Tournament had its first appearance at St Ives last year.

Head on - Jousting was first used in battle on horseback. As a sport it began with knights on horseback running towards each other, aiming to strike the other with the lance.

Extreme - Jousting has been called the "original extreme sport", according to Kotaku.

Lances at the ready - The stakes are high because the lances used are made of solid wood and steel in this tournament, unlike most that use a false tip made of balsa wood or a softer material.

Unhorsed - As the lances are stronger, they hit harder. This means there is a very real chance of participants being unhorsed, although rare.

Highlights - St Ives Medieval Faire is held on September 22 and 23. And this year will welcome the first female jouster, Lady Caroline.

Battles - Glorious battles with hand-forged weapons and armour give off the sound of clashing swords and splintering shields.

Birds of prey - There is a demonstration with birds of prey, longbow archery, and Australia's only giant trebuchet catapult as well as canons.

Artisan - Crafters and artisans markets will be available, as well as a long-table feast for 20,000 medieval enthusiasts heading to the fair.

Meads - The beverages will also include a delicious selection of ales and meads, including brews from Australia's first all-female brew team, Two Birds Brewing, in honour of the first female jouster.

Lady Caroline - They have custom made three ales for the event, including a golden ale named in honour of Lady Caroline, according to The Music.

Timeline Festival - The event will be held at Ballarat's Kryal Castle in VIC on October 20 and 21.

Ages - The festival has a Living History Village where over 350 reenactors come together to portray life throughout the Middle Ages.

Exhibit - There are over 300m of encampments and displays included as a part of the Living History Village.

Name - As it suggests in the name, the festival pays tribute to not only the medieval era, but also other eras throughout history.

Metal - Timeline Festival will also include a full metal combat arena and blacksmith forge, which has to be seen to be believed.

Combat - Activities of combat include jousting and mounted skill at arms, Viking combat, Medieval full contact combat, muscat and axe.

The Knattleikr - One of the competitions includes a Viking ball game called The Knattleikr, as well as archery and other traditional castle games.

LARP - Live Action Role Play is a big part of these festivals, and all are encouraged to participate.
