Serena Williams made international headlines when a disagreement between her and the US Open umpire Carlos Ramos turned explosive. The 23-time Grand Slam champion was accused of getting sideline assistance from her coach, which led to her breaking her racket and labelling Ramos a "thief."
In an interview with 'The Project’s' Lisa Wilkinson, Williams recalled the penalty against her and her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. “He said he made a motion,” the tennis star explained. “I don’t understand what he was talking about. We’ve never had signals."
Williams went on to claim that sexism was at play, for the steep punishment she received for her reaction. “I just don’t understand… if you’re a female you should be able to do even half of what a guy can do,” Williams stated.
This highly-publicized controversy has sparked a wider debate about inequality in athletics. As a long-time advocate for female empowerment on and off the court, Williams is standing firm in her claims that the US Open match was unfairly judged.
